Isle of Jura Tourism & Marketing Project

Why Jura Needs a Coordinated Tourism Project

Jura is experiencing significant growth in tourism, with over 40 businesses now involved in welcoming visitors to our island. This growth brings opportunity – and the need for coordinated support to ensure sustainable development that benefits our whole community.

As a small, remote island with unique challenges, Jura needs tourism marketing and infrastructure that reflects our distinct character, protects our fragile environment, and serves our community’s needs. Independent coordination ensures we can pursue opportunities suited to our island’s scale while maintaining the authentic, non-commercialised experience that makes Jura special.

Supporting Local Tourism

Our island’s tourism businesses – from accommodation providers and activity operators to distilleries, estates, and hospitality venues – each contribute to Jura’s visitor experience. Many operate on small margins in a challenging environment with limited infrastructure and seasonal constraints.

The Tourism Project provides collective support through:

  • Coordinated marketing that raises Jura’s profile beyond what individual businesses can achieve alone
  • Shared resources including photography, content creation, and promotional materials
  • Business networking and knowledge sharing to strengthen our tourism community
  • Representation with regional and national tourism bodies
  • Infrastructure advocacy for improvements that benefit businesses and visitors alike

Our Tourism Community:

Jura’s tourism sector includes 24 accommodation providers, 13 activity and tour operators, 3 distillery visitor experiences, 3 working estates, and numerous artists, makers, and service providers.

Together, these businesses welcome thousands of visitors annually while maintaining Jura’s authentic character and supporting our island community.

What the Project Delivers

Destination Marketing:

  • isleofjura.scot as Jura’s comprehensive tourism portal (currently 4,500+ monthly visits)
  • Content creation including photography, video, blog posts, and itineraries
  • Social media presence and digital marketing campaigns (Our Facebook and Instagram pages)
  • Partnership development with ferry operators, regional tourism bodies, and media

Business Support:

  • Free business listings and profile pages on isleofjura.scot
  • Networking opportunities and collaborative marketing initiatives
  • Training and development opportunities through AITC and other partners
  • Representation at regional and national tourism events

Infrastructure & Advocacy:

  • Working with Argyll & Bute Council, ferry operators, and service providers
  • Advocating for visitor infrastructure improvements (signage, facilities, information)
  • Supporting sustainable tourism development that protects Jura’s environment and community

Tourism is increasingly important to Jura’s economy, supporting employment, sustaining services, and contributing to community resilience. Coordinated tourism development ensures:

Economic Benefits:

  • Extended visitor season and increased visitor spending across island businesses
  • Job creation and retention, particularly important for young people and families
  • Support for year-round services through sustainable visitor numbers
  • Diversified income for estates, farms, and community enterprises

Community Benefits:

  • Improved infrastructure and services that benefit residents and visitors
  • Preservation and promotion of Jura’s culture, heritage, and Gaelic language
  • Environmental protection through managed, sustainable visitor experiences
  • Community engagement in tourism decisions that affect our island

What Makes Jura Different: Unlike larger destinations, Jura’s tourism development prioritises quality over quantity, authenticity over commercialisation, and community benefit over maximum growth. We’re building tourism that serves our island, not the other way around.

How the Project Is Managed

The Jura Tourism Project currently operates under the Jura Development Trust with input from island tourism businesses, Jura Community Council, and community stakeholders.

Governance:

  • Tourism steering group with representation from accommodation, activities, hospitality, and estates
  • Regular consultation with JDT board and JCC
  • Transparent financial management with ring-fenced tourism funds
  • Annual reporting on activities, impact, and community benefit

Partnerships:

Operations: Day-to-day management by  isleofjura.scot volunteer team, supported by business volunteers and community input.

Tourism and Transport: Supporting the Jura Passenger Ferry

The success of tourism on Jura is closely linked to reliable passenger transport. The Jura Passenger Ferry plays a vital role in connecting the island with neighbouring communities, supporting residents, workers and visitors alike.

The ferry is operated by the Jura Development Trust and currently runs 3.5 days per week. Increasing demand from visitors would allow the service to operate 5.5 days per week, improving accessibility for both the community and the local economy.

This project therefore links coordinated tourism promotion with sustainable transport support. By increasing visitor numbers and encouraging tourists to use the passenger ferry at full fare, the project helps:

  • Strengthen the financial sustainability of the ferry service

  • Reduce long-term reliance on grant subsidy

  • Improve access for residents and businesses

  • Support a more resilient, year-round visitor economy

An additional £10,000 per year is required to support expanded ferry operations. Integrating ferry sustainability into this tourism project ensures that visitor growth directly contributes to the services that make Jura accessible.

Funding and Support

The Isle of Jura Tourism & Marketing Project operates on a modest, community-led budget, maximising impact through volunteer effort, local collaboration and strategic partnerships. The project is closely linked to the sustainability of key community infrastructure, including the Jura Passenger Ferry, which is essential to Jura’s visitor economy.

Current Status

The Tourism Project currently operates as a volunteer-led initiative, with isleofjura.scot funded and managed personally by Jura residents who believe in independent, community-driven tourism development for the island.

The Jura Passenger Ferry is operated by the Jura Development Trust and currently runs 4.5 days per week, serving residents, workers and visitors. Expanding this service is directly linked to increased and more consistent visitor demand.

What We Are Operating On Now

Tourism & Marketing

  • Website hosting, domain and maintenance: personally funded

  • Content creation, photography and business outreach: volunteer time and local in-kind support

  • Social media management and marketing: volunteer effort

  • AITC membership and Holiday West Highland Magazine: currently funded by a local business

Passenger Ferry

  • Core operations supported through Jura Development Trust funding and subsidy

  • Limited timetable reflects current financial constraints rather than demand potential

This bootstrap approach has proven the concept. isleofjura.scot now receives 4,500+ visits per month with no marketing budget, demonstrating strong organic demand. However, reliance on volunteer capacity and limited transport availability is not sustainable long-term.

Why We Are Seeking Funding

To move from a volunteer-dependent model to a professionally sustainable, integrated visitor economy, we are seeking separately ring-fenced funding that supports both:

  • Coordinated tourism promotion, and

  • Reliable passenger transport that enables visitors to reach Jura and supports residents year-round.

Tourism promotion increases demand; the passenger ferry enables access. Together, they form a single, coherent system.

Immediate Priorities (Year 1 – Approx. £20,000)

Tourism & Marketing (£10,000)

  • Professional photography: £3,000

  • AITC membership renewal and Holiday West Highland DMO pages: £1,000

  • Content creation partnerships: £3,000

  • Sustainable tourism training/workshops (e.g. Press Pause): £1,500–£2,000

  • Website improvements, hosting and technical support: £1,000

Passenger Ferry Sustainability (£10,000 per year)

  • Contribution towards expanding the Jura Passenger Ferry timetable from 4.5 days to 6 days per week

  • Supporting operational costs to allow increased visitor usage at full fare

  • Reducing long-term reliance on grant subsidy by growing fare-paying passenger numbers

Longer-Term Development (Years 2–3)

  • Part-time Tourism Development role to reduce volunteer burden

  • Seasonal and shoulder-season marketing campaigns

  • Improved visitor information and wayfinding

  • Stronger links between tourism growth and transport sustainability

  • Continued reduction in subsidy dependency through increased visitor income

Ring-Fenced Funding and Financial Transparency

All funding raised through this project is clearly ring-fenced and transparently managed.

Contributions made by tourism businesses (for example, website listings, enhanced profiles or promotional support) which have reference “Jura Tourism Project” are used exclusively for tourism and marketing activity and do not contribute to the operation of the Jura Passenger Ferry.

Funding for the Jura Passenger Ferry forms a separate, ring-fenced element of the overall £20,000 funding requirement and is managed independently through the Jura Development Trust.  Please mark your donation as “Jura Passenger Ferry” if this is what you would like to support.

While tourism promotion and passenger transport are strategically linked as part of a single visitor economy approach, financial contributions are not mixed, ensuring clarity for businesses, funders and supporters.

For Funders and Supporters

This project demonstrates:

  • Strong community commitment, with significant personal and volunteer investment already made

  • Proven delivery capacity, evidenced by high website engagement with minimal resources

  • A joined-up approach to tourism and transport that strengthens Jura’s economy while supporting essential community services

Funding will enable the project to scale what is already working, while ensuring long-term sustainability, resilience and community benefit for the Isle of Jura.
